The Landing, Bay of Islands Pinot Gris 2023

TASTING NOTES

This aromatic and textural Pinot Gris is full and complex on the palate, balanced with a long, juicy finish. Hand-picked fruit was destemmed, soaked overnight, then gently pressed before fermentation in seasoned French barriques.

VINEYARD AND WINE MAKING

This fruit was mostly whole-bunch pressed, settled and racked to stainless tanks for fermentation. Around a quarter of the harvest was given extended skin contact prior to fermentation which increases colour, phenolics and aroma. Fermentation was cool and slow to maximise fruit and floral characters in the wine. The wine was then settled naturally before filtration and bottling.

Harvested from a mix of clone 457 and Barrie vines growing in the greywacke clay soils. Hand-picked across several days from late February to mid-March following a warm, dry growing season.

VINTAGE NOTES

When given the restraint and respect it deserves in the vineyard and winery, Pinot Gris grapes deliver a richly textured, versatile food-friendly wine. That’s certainly our aim with our Northland style.

After a warm, dry growing season, we hand-picked these grapes in exacting lots over several days from late February to mid-March, to create a wonderfully characterful wine with just a touch of sweetness. Luxurious aromas of pear, baked apple, vanilla and white jasmine complement the off-dry palate of apple tatin and pear, giving it a moreish texture that will age gracefully over the next five years.

The Landing Vineyard on the Purerua Peninsula has been thoughtfully farmed for over a century. The crumbly young clay soils these vines have been selectively planted in naturally moderate vigour, ensuring high-quality, well balanced wines.
